Osteopathy for Babies

Birth can be a very demanding process for your Baby. It’s head and body will be subjected to strong forces as the uterus contracts to twist the baby down the birth canal through the pelvis. This journey can be both physically and emotionally challenging for your Baby.

Osteopathy is a gentle and safe way to assess and treat your Baby. Osteopathic treatment may help to relieve stresses and strains on your Babies body to help to soothe and relax them.

If you observe any asymmetry in your babies head shape or facial features come for an assessment immediately. Flat head syndrome (Brachycephaly / Plagiocephaly) can often be avoided if identified early enough.

If your baby is favouring one side to feed or sleep it may indicate problems with their neck mobility or muscles. This is sometimes related to jaw and tongue movement restrictions. These problems will affect feeding and can result in a very unsettled baby that feeds frequently and has lots of trapped wind.

Osteopathic treatment can improved neck and jaw movement so enabling your baby to suckle more effectively which is turn can decrease colic and reflux symptoms.

Osteopathy for Mum

Osteopathy can help to support your pregnancy, delivery and nursing. Osteopathic treatment in safe during all stages of pregnancy.

While some pain in pregnancy is very common it is not normal and Osteopathy can treat it safely & effectively.

During pregnancy your posture has to adapt as your developing baby grows in size. Pain will result if your body is unable to move freely, perhaps due to previous injuries or spinal problems.

  • Neck and Shoulder Pain
  • Back and Rib Pain
  • Pelvic Girdle Pain (PGP), Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD), sciatica

Weight gain combined with the softening of ligaments due to pregnancy hormones can increase pain and discomfort.

Osteopathic treatment can gently but effectively improve your mobility, and eliminate or help you to manage any pain.

In addition to manual osteopathic treatment, your Osteopath will be able to provide exercise and postural advice.

Once your baby is born, Osteopathy can help you to recover from the delivery. Helping your spine and pelvis to realign and avoid continuing problems.

Increased neck, shoulder or wrist pain are very common in new mothers as their body tries to cope with the extra demands of feeding and caring for their baby.  Seeking treatment to resolve any issues will make these early months easier for both Mum and Baby, helping you both to relax and increasing your wellbeing.
